Report on the Northwest Washington Synod Assembly (Part 1II)

“Lutheran Campus Ministry”
By Joyce Thode, Synod Assembly Voting Member

2007 marks the 100th anniversary of Lutheran Campus Ministry in the United States. The ELCA and its 65 Synods recognize 185 campus ministry centers on public and private colleges and universities around the country.  The NW Washington Synod has recognized and supported campus ministry for the last 50 years.

The Synod sends a large amount of its support to Region I.  This region includes University of Washington, Western Washington University, Oregon State University, Portland State University, Washington State University, Eastern Washington University, University of Idaho, University of Montana and Montana State University.  More than 250,000 students are enrolled in these schools.

At the Assembly earlier this year, it was resolved that the NW Washington Synod and its congregations recognize 2007 as the year to celebrate the 100-year heritage of Lutheran Campus Ministry in the United States.

Lutheran Campus Ministry does hold a soft spot in my heart.  I was very involved in and worked for, CAYAM, the Lutheran Campus Ministry at Eastern Washington University. Carsten and I also met at a Lutheran Student Movement Convention in Bozeman, Montana. And .... my campus pastor married Carsten and me in Spokane.

It was discussed at the Assembly that we should find ways to make known the value  of Lutheran Campus Ministries  to church members and to college bound students.  I know myself that once I was introduced to my church family away from home, college was not as daunting.  I still remain friends (and married one!) with people that I met while in LCM.

Pastors who work in campus ministry are a resilient bunch as they try to connect with students who are away from home for the first time.  Sometimes it takes many attempts to get kids to try out this campus ministry  'thing'.  As a congregation, we should find ways to support these ministries, and I don't mean monetarily.  We can do this by helping to connect students  we know with the LCM at their colleges.  It is a positive connection that can keep a young person's faith fueled in those college days.

Let's help keep that connection and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Campus Ministry in 2007!!

Report on the Northwest Washington Synod Assembly (Part 1I)

“The One Campaign”
By Joyce Thode, Synod Assembly Voting Member

Can you believe that today 950 million people live in extreme poverty? This means that they live on less than a dollar a day. Daily hunger is not a stranger. Could you live on a half-cup of rice a day?

The One Campaign is a new effort by Americans to rally fellow Americans to fight extreme poverty in the world and the rise of global AIDS. The One Campaign is asking people to convince our leaders to give an additional one percent of the total general budget to meet the basic needs of the world’s poorest people.

The One Campaign has emerged as a way to make ending world hunger a reality. The ELCA supports this through its One Lutheran emphasis. Over two million people have signed a One Campaign pledge.

At this year’s assembly, people were encouraged to sign on to the One Campaign. People were asked to sign letters to Senators Cantwell and Murray encouraging them to increase the giving amount to overcome hunger and disease to $5 billion for 2007.

It was resolved and passed that the Northwest Washington Synod urge members of its congregations to support the One Campaign and the One Lutheran advocacy program. A One Lutheran resource team will be formed to offer resources and information to any interested congregations.

Report on the Northwest Washington Synod Assembly (Part 1)

By Joyce Thode, Synod Assembly Voting Member

On June 2 and 3, the Northwest Washington Synod held its annual assembly at the Lynnwood Convention Center.  The theme of this year's gathering was “Living in God's Amazing Grace."  I attended this assembly as a voting member from Northlake.  It had been over 20 years since I attended a synod assembly.  Here I was in the midst of 400 other Lutherans from all around our Synod.  It is amazing to watch the Synod at work.  Yeah, yeah, there are times that people argue about what seem to be trivial items.  This process should make us realize that we have the right to disagree and to remember that we ARE the children of God.  That should be placed in front of all disagreements.

After giving my report at an adult Sunday School, I began thinking that people could learn more about the resolutions that were discussed at this year's assembly.  So for the next few months, I will be giving you an Assembly Moment.  Hopefully, this will give you more insight on what the Synod and the ELCA are doing.

Partnership to End Homelessness

In this country, the number of homeless continues to grow.  In 2004, King County found that 8,300 people were homeless with 3,700 people who went without any type of shelter.  Many are women and children trying to get out of abusive and dangerous situations.  Unfortunately, inadequate funding in human services has caused these people to not find any needed shelter.  In the US, 36 million people are living below the poverty line, and one out of six children is affected by poverty.

Right now, plans are being developed such as Bill 2163.  This bill is the first step toward a statewide Ten-Year Plan to end homelessness.  Many Lutheran congregations are doing what they can to minister to the homeless with charity and compassion.

It was resolved at the Assembly that we hear the greatest commandment to love God and our neighbors as ourselves.  We do this by challenging congregations to work for the development of affordable and supportive housing and actively support the supplemental ministries of charity.  The Synod and the Bishop will have decision-making strategies to support congregational activity in making this a reality.

The NW Synod will be full partner with civil partners to call and to act for the end of homelessness in ten years as stated in the Ten-Year Plan.  Wouldn't it be wonderful to see the end of homelessness in the next ten years? If you have any questions about this resolution, please feel free to contact me.
