September 7 . . .

. . . a festive day that previews the months ahead.

We will continue our “one service at 9 o’clock” through September 7. Immediately following the service on this day, there will be a brunch for all. Along with the tasty food, other special activities will take place.

This “hint” is just one of the things you will want to be a part of on this celebratory day — don’t miss out on the fun! Our fall schedule then resumes the following week:

Rally Sunday, September 14.

Pioneer Clubs begins again on September 17.

Sunday  School Scoop. . .

Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

Sunday, September 14th will be Rally Day for Sunday School. Our theme this school year is, “Walking With Jesus”. We are planning special activities and a treat for Rally Day -- we are looking forward to seeing all of those young smiling faces again.

Sunday School and Pioneer Clubs are still in need of teachers for both programs. For Sunday School, please call Bev Peterson at 425-775-6345 and for Pioneer Clubs, talk to Judy Elbert ….. or call the church office.

As with all aspects of our lives, in giving we get so much more out then we put in. Volunteering is a blessing to us as well as those we serve. Put your time and talents where you feel they are most important in life. Pray about it, listen to God, and then volunteer.

Day Camp - Thank you to the volunteers that provided snacks or helped at the Day Camp in July. Thank you for the families that housed or provided dinner to the Lutherwood counselors
Fishing Kits – Thank you for the offerings to the Sunday School during the 2007-2008 school year. With the $264 we collected, we were able to buy 6.5 fishing kits through World Vision for third world countries.

Northlake Grove School Supplies – Thank you to all who brought supplies or provided money for our super-shopper, Nancy Martin, to purchase supplies. We filled 25 backpacks with school supplies and delivered them to Northlake Grove.

It’s that time again to get back to singing in the choir, and I’d like to encourage all of you to join us this year.

Our first rehearsal is on Thursday, September 4 from 7—8:30 pm. Afterward, we’ll have a little dessert potluck. (Please note: if you are new to the choir, please come as our guest; don’t worry about bringing anything for the dessert.) Current members, the following is a list assigning people desserts, based on the first letter of your last name:

A - J: Bar cookies        K - Q: Pie           R - Z: Fruit

The choir will begin singing for worship on Rally Day, September 14. We’ll talk more about the calendar when we meet. One thing you can add to your calendars now — it’s our turn to host The Promise of Christmas concert that we do with Epiphany Lutheran’s choir. The date for that is December 14.

Blessings to you all, and I look forward to singing praises to God with you on September 4 in the Choir Room.

SAFE CHURCH PLAN

Northlake’s Safe Church Plan was approved by the Church Council and implemented last year. The plan covers chaperones, permission forms, background checks, etc. A complete copy is available to anyone who is interested. The purpose of the plan is for the protection of our children and youth.

We had training classes and background checks for all who volunteer or think they may volunteer with our children or youth. Individuals sign a form before a check is initiated, and information from the background checks is received in the church office and is totally confidential.

It is now time to receive feedback on the Safe Church Plan from congregational members. Please email any feedback to Jeanie, and she will forward it to the Parish Education Committee for review.

When we think about our own lives, and how our faith sustains and guides us and gives us hope and purpose, we need to remember that not everyone has Jesus but  that they need Him.

Moving Forward

Mission Planning Team established

As a result of the Year of Transformation work that was done in 2007, Pastor Dick Wendt, our consultant, put forth the challenge to establish some immediate goals and also to look at more long range goals by establishing a three-five year plan.  The immediate goals have been published previously as
the Top Six 0of our “RED DOT” exercise.  We now move into the more extended planning. Read More...

A Reflection on Faith

As I sit under the protection of the eaves of my roof while the rain pours down, I reflect on the old wooden stave barrel that stands next to me. Many visitors and guests to my home must wonder why this old barrel should preside in such a prominent location. I myself question its purpose as a planter stand just outside the kitchen window. It is a very large barrel, larger than any normal planter stand, and one that is showing its age with warped staves and rusted hoops. One end of the barrel no longer has the wooden end that would make it complete and usable for its original purpose.

I guess that it is the barrel’s original purpose and use that compels me to hold it so dear to my heart. At one time barrels were the popular means for packaging, storing and conveying goods throughout the world. They served to hold water, salted beef, flour, possessions and many other sorts of materials and merchandise.

President's Spotlight

As the summer begins, I want to congratulate all of those who have recently graduated, whether it is from elementary to middle school, middle school to high school, or from school in general!  It's a great feat and requires much dedication.  For those of us where graduation is but a memory, we can redirect that dedication to our faith; as it says in Mathew 17:20, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can move mountains.  So as you go about you summer vacations, keep that mustard seed of faith with you, and remember, enjoy the beauty of God's world and keep the faith!  God bless, and have a great summer.

Bishop's Message

For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us…. Acts 15:28 NRSV

by The Reverend Wm. Chris Boerger, Bishop

May I be so bold as to suggest this is the first resolution adopted by an Assembly of God’s people after the day of Pentecost. These are the opening words of the report that Paul and Barnabus are to take to the church in Antioch in response to the question of whether circumcision was to be required of Gentile Christians. Those of us who are students of assemblies and how church’s make decision might wish that we had a transcript of the debate around this issue to guide us as we make decisions about what the Holy Spirit is guiding us to do today.....Read more...

PIONEER CLUBS: For kids,
for adults, for community

On Wednesday nights something special happens.  Children come together (preschool-6th grade), from our church as well as from the community and experience being the family of God.  We have fun working on activity awards, we explore the Bible, and we practice what it means to live as Christians.  more....

Offering Options

At the last Church Council meeting, we discussed ways to help people to make their offerings.  Joyce and I have our giving set up directly from our checking account.  This sends money directly to church every month in the amount that we specify.  It allows us to give off of the top of our money, and also provides us the knowledge that it will always be done so that our offerings are paid in time, every month.  This is always important to help things flow smoothly for the church.

Quilts Shipped to Lutheran World Relief

The beautiful quilts that were blessed at the altar on October 21 have now been shipped -- Tom and Vicky Hacker packed and delivered 38 to the shipping point. Many thanks to our faithful group of ladies who work on this labor of love: Vicky, Kay Shea, Ferne Pierce, Ruth Stuvland (who tie the quilts) and Dot Brenchley & Janet Loewen (who hem the edges). Ferne Pierce also pieces the quilt tops.

Prayer Chain
Reorganization

As the church receives requests for special prayers, the Prayer Chain is activated, Those serving on the Prayer Chain are asked to call the next person on the list, and to include the prayer concern in their daily prayers.

It is time to update the church Prayer Chain list. Some people currently on the list are no longer available, and there may be others who would like to participate.

Please indicate your willingness to serve on the Prayer Chain. You can drop a pink slip in the offering plate with your name and the words, “Prayer Chain” or email mcbee@northlakelutheran.org  by Monday, March 10. A new Prayer Chain list will then be circulated using the names of those who have indicated their willingness to serve this important ministry.

Exercisers’ Alert!

Perhaps you’ve noticed while reading the Sunday church bulletin insert that there seems to be someone coming to exercise at church at 10 AM on Monday,  Wednesday,  and  Friday.  If you’ve wondered who these people are, we are a small group at the moment:  Janet Loewen, Dot Brenchley and Linda   Musgrave.  Marge Dale had purchased a set of VHS tapes by way of an infomercial on TV and asked around for interested ladies who would like to exercise together at the church.  Six or more ladies started out fairly regularly, but some ended up deciding they preferred to be walking outdoors, so the group dwindled.  This present group has continued to meet for several years now.  Anyone is welcome to join in.  If 10 AM is not a workable time, come at another time and use the tape or DVD of your choice and ability (they are in the library).  Just return everything to its proper place when you are finished.   ~ Janet Loewen
