Goats for Africa

The Sunday School is using their offerings to purchase goats for Africa. Each goat costs about $35. There is a map of Africa in the Sunday School wing that has a goat stamped on it for each goat we have the money to purchase. So far there are 12 goats!  This project can continue even though Sunday School is in recess.  Donations are gladly accepted.~ The Parish Education Committee

November 2006

Sunday School & Pioneer Clubs

We still need Sunday School teachers and Pioneer Club leaders. Please prayerfully consider it and let Bev Peterson or Judy Elbert know if you can help.

This year the Sunday School children voted to have their offerings used to purchase goats for Africa.  Fun skits have been put on by the junior high class for the Sunday School kids, to highlight this program.  (Goats can live in an environment where other livestock cannot, so this project helps families in draught-stricken areas by providing them with milk and a product to sell so they will have money to purchase other necessities.) To date, our offerings are sufficient to purchase 2.25 goats!

The Sunday School/Pioneer Club Christmas program will be on Sunday, December 17th, at which time there will be one worship service at 10 am.

The Lutheran Magazine

When compared with the average denominational magazine, The Lutheran provides the greatest value with 30 percent more volume and 40 percent less cost. Published monthly, The Lutheran is not mission supported. The cost is kept as low as possible to connect as many Lutherans as possible to the ELCA at all levels.

Individual subscription plans are available at $15.95 per year.

You can subscribe on line at:

or by mail to The Lutheran, Box 1209, Minneapolis, MN 55440-9941.

Hope in God in Times of Suffering
Lutheran Woman Today Bible Study 2006-07

Faith and Terrance Fretheim, during their introduction to this year’s Bible study, stress that those who do this study “Read the Word. Read the World.” In studying the scripture, where are the correlations to current life and times? For assistance, they provided the following suggested reading list.

October - A God of Relationship
“The Mermaid Chair” by Sue Monk Kid
“The Solace of Leaving Early” by Haven Kimmel

November - Suffering As Becoming
“The Good Husband” by Gail Godwin
“Housekeeping” by Marilyn Robinson

December - Suffering as a Consequence of Sin
“Gilead” by Marilynne Robinson

(To be continued next month)

October 2006

The Sunday School and Pioneer Club Programs continue to need teachers.

Please talk to Bev Peterson (Sunday School) or Judy Elbert (Pioneer Clubs) if you can help out. Options are full time, part time, team teaching, etc., etc.— they are willing to work with you and your schedule!

As Sunday School Coordinator, Bev Peterson, says: “As with all aspects of our lives, in giving we get so much more out than we put in. Volunteering is a blessing to us as well as those we serve. Put your time and talents where you feel are most important in life. Pray about it, listen to God, and then volunteer.”

Editorial Note: Have you seen how many children are participating in Pioneer Clubs this year? It is awesome, and very rewarding to the leaders to be able to touch the lives of all these children.

Likewise with Sunday School - there is a re-formatted opening with music, stories, and fun times; the kids adopted the “Goats for Africa” program as the focus for their offerings this year; and current teachers are doing a wonderful job of bringing the Bible stories to the children and making them relevant to their young lives. They just need more teachers!!

September 2006

Sunday, September 10th will be Rally Day for Sunday School, and we are planning a special activity and treat. We are looking forward to seeing all of those young, smiling faces after the summer break.

Sunday School and Pioneer Clubs are still in need of teachers. For Sunday School, call Bev Peterson at 425-775-6345, and for Pioneer Clubs, talk to Judy Elbert (425-487-0648) .... or call the church office.

As with all aspects of our lives, in giving we get so much more out then we put in. Volunteering is a blessing to us as well as those we serve. Put your time and talents where you feel are most important in life. Pray about it, listen to God, and then volunteer.

Pioneer Clubs to resume activities

Pioneer Clubs starts on September 13th.  (The 13th will be our kickoff carnival and the regular meetings begin the following week.)  We meet each Wednesday from 6:30 - 8 PM.  Hurrah! Another season is upon us of adults and children playing together, exploring the Bible together and building community.  We ask $35 to cover materials and awards, and you can register at the same time as Sunday School.
Why Pioneer Clubs?  Because when we meet outside of the Sunday morning experience we can truly internalize that Jesus is for every day, not just Sunday.  When we explore what the Bible says about friendships, family, the world and our church, we put the stories we have learned into practice.  While we have fun working on activity awards we practice the Christian life through joy, patience, courtesy and forgiveness as we use our God-given gifts.
So, consider arranging your children’s activities to include Pioneer Clubs while they are young. Pioneer Clubs really helps the kids have church so integrated into their lives that they expect to participate in confirmation and youth group, later on.  (This year Rose will start a “pre-youth group” for our 5th and 6th grade kids on the fourth Wednesday of each month.)  Pioneer Clubs has been a great way for children to invite and include their friends in their church life. They also have come to know adults in the congregation as their mentors and friends.
Please also consider joining Pioneer Clubs as an adult leader.  We enjoy help from parents, folks with no kids and older kids, too.  Did you know that over half of our leaders do not have children in the program?
We are excited to look forward to the adventures ahead.  See you Wednesday nights!

SUNDAY SCHOOL . . .

The last day of Sunday School will be Sunday, June 11th.  Up until the end of Sunday School for this school year, there will continue to be a lot of fun activities and great lessons. We are looking forward to seeing all those smiling young faces each Sunday morning.

For those who may have missed it, the Sunday School/Confirmation kids did an outstanding job on the Passion Play on Palm Sunday.

October 2005

Sunday School and Pioneer Clubs have started for the year. But we are still in need of teachers for both.  For Sunday School, call Bev Peterson and for Pioneer Clubs, talk to Judy Elbert ........ or call the church office.

As with all aspects of our lives in giving, we get so much more out of it than we put into it.   Volunteering is a blessing to us as well as those we serve.  Put your time and talents where you feel are most important in life.  Pray about it, listen to God, and then volunteer.

September 2005

2005-2006

This Fall, in an effort to be more “seeker sensitive & user friendly,” we will be launching an all new series of Adult Forums and learning opportunities designed to be both inviting and inspiring for all people.  In these forums and learning opportunities we will be covering a vast array of topics and issues.  Please look through the enclosed Adult Forums and Education Opportunities booklet and prayerfully consider taking part in one or more of the offerings, and please bring a friend!

Please Note:  We are still looking for individuals who feel a desire and strong sense of commitment to insuring that the children, with whom we have been entrusted, receive the best possible Christian Education that can be offered.

For more information, or if you have any questions about what is involved in teaching or in assisting those who are teaching, please contact:

Sunday School and Pioneer Clubs

The Impact Lasts a Lifetime

by Judy Elbert

I have been a part of Northlake Lutheran Church since I was twelve. Northlake is the place where God called me to be one of his, trained me to turn to scripture for his promises and direction in my life and surrounded me, then and now, with mentors and companions. How? God used Ken Musgrave and    Pastor Anenson as my confirmation teachers, God used Bonnie Regelein and Jeanine Wagner as my Pioneer Club leaders, there were also Sunday School teachers, my adult “pal”, and the “grandmas” who always asked me how I was and what I was up to at school. Today I am able to be someone God uses to start a new generation who love and trust him with their lives. What a joy!

It is a tremendous blessing to be able to bring our children to Sunday School and Pioneer Clubs and all the other events in the life of our church. Years ago Brian and I decided that we wanted our children to have Christ at the center of their lives and that one of the ways we would help that happen was to make the events at church the priority over other things. Not just for our kids or just for us, but for all of us.

I know my kids will grow up and will journey places I cannot imagine. What a blessing to know they will have years of training in God’s promises, encouragement in the love of Christ, mentors, companions and cheerleaders from their church family.

Sound encouraging? Join in! Get involved in our Sunday School and Pioneer Clubs and Pal programs. As a parent, a teacher, a club leader, committee member or a pal, you can be part of God’s work. Best yet, God will give you the gifts of learning more about him, companions and mentors.
