Prayer Shawl Ministry

Shawl Ministries originated elsewhere by Janet Bristow and Victoria Cole-Galo, and Lucy Kay Osborne organized the group at Northlake.  There have been a varying number of participants — up to 16 at one gathering!!   Currently there are six regulars who meet in the church library on Monday evenings to knit, visit, and share a cup of tea or two…..and knit the shawls, chemo caps, scarves, baby blankets and socks that they share with others.   More people are always welcome and encouraged to participate.  Those currently participating on a regular basis are Lucy Kay, Connie Wolter, Janet Loewen, Bobbi Osborne, Millie Rowbottom, and Carol Coleman.  Recently Lucy Kay received a call from Providence Hospital’s Hospice program, asking about this ministry.
There is symbolism in the knitting pattern they use for the shawls.   We've all heard people say that "things happen in three's."  In the Christian faith tradition, the number three, symbolized by the Trinity (Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer), has come to mean wholeness. It is said that the number 3 is used 523 times in Scripture!  Many phases of life happen in combinations of three: child/adult/senior, as well as past/present/future and life/death/eternal life.  We've all heard of the concept of body/mind/spirit, which encompasses the physical, mental and spiritual makeup of a human being; and we have been encouraged to live and act in  faith/hope/love.  The 3-stitch seed pattern was selected as a symbol of planting peace, healing, love, comfort and hope.  It is the hope that all involved will be inspired by the significance of these symbols which are meant to enhance the creating and receiving process of this ministry.

PRAYER SHAWL PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father,

you formed my being.
You knit me together in my mother's womb.
To my flesh and blood you gave the breath of life.

O Loving God,renew me this day in your love.
Grant me life as a gift of your faithfulness;
Grant me hope to sustain me.

May this prayer shawl be for me a sign of your healing presence.
May it warm me when I am weary;
May it surround me with comfort to ease my suffering;
May it encircle me with caring when I am in pain.

Oh Jesus Christ, who healed the broken in body and spirit,

be with me and all that suffer this day.
Be with doctors, nurses, technicians,
and everyone who cares for the sick.

May your gentle yet strong, healing
touch reach out to heal all the broken and hurting
people and places in our world.

 Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ,
for each new day.
I wear this prayer shawl and
pray in Jesus' name,

Amen.
