CASCADE CAMP CHERITH
BOYS July 6-12 (boys)
GIRLS July 13-19 & 20-26 (girls)

The camping ministry of Pioneer Clubs has three weeks of camp for boys
and girls. The overnight camp is near Cle Elum. Kids do not need to be a
member of Pioneer Clubs to attend. Beyond traditional camp fun, Camp
Cherith gives kids the opportunity to develop both new and advanced skills
in horsemanship, archery, canoeing, riflery, crafts, clowning, swimming,
drama, nature and more. Daily devotions and Bible study help children grow
closer to Jesus. Laser tag, the bungee run, human hamster balls and the
Saturn water toy add loads of fun. Don’t you want to go? Campers are
entering grades 2-12 in the fall. Volunteer opportunities are numerous for
adults who love children to serve as counselors, activity specialists and
janitors.

Moving Forward
Mission Planning Team established
As a result of the Year of Transformation work that was
done in 2007, Pastor Dick Wendt, our consultant, put forth the challenge to
establish some immediate goals and also to look at more long range goals by
establishing a three-five year plan. The immediate goals have been
published previously as
the Top Six 0of our “RED DOT” exercise. We now move into the more extended
planning. Read More...

“Just Desserts” a huge success !
Detective Dirk Drake (played by David Osborne) arrives by “Kenmore Air”
to solve the murder mystery at the “Just Desserts” production. Howard the
butler (played by Alan Murdock) is in the background — he seems a bit
nervous that the detective is arriving !! This event was organized by Flo
Lindstrom in response to a suggestion by a non-member, Cherry Van
Overstraeten, who wanted to repay Northlake for generously allowing
community groups to use church facilities. Cherry wrote and directed the
play. Other performers included Shannan Hayes, Joanne Hayne, Sara Hayashi,
Bruce Keegan, Judy Keegan, and Lucy Kay Osborne.

Hopelink

Thank you for all the
food collected during our March food drive for Hopelink. We will continue to
have a basket just inside the front entrance of the church for ongoing food
donations to this food bank. Please continue to remember them on your trips
to the grocery store. Read more... |

Sharing Talents
One of the Three Ts of Stewardship
The Stewardship Committee has begun a discussion about ways to
encourage members to share their talents in a variety of ways that will
promote fellowship and enhance involvement, as well. This discussion came
about after the early May “Just Desserts” fundraising event. This
production showed that people (the actors) have hidden talents that even
they may not be aware of ….. more |

Youth Receives Honor . . .
The Inglemoor High School DECA Team won first place in an
international competition with DECA squads from the fifty states, Canada,
Germany and Puerto Rico. Northlake’s Aaron Coombs is a part of this champion
group. Congratulations to Aaron and his fellow team members!

SOCIAL MINISTRIES
As we mentioned in the last Northlights, during the summer months
children no longer have access to breakfast or lunch at school. This makes
it a time of greater need at food banks to provide items for these meals.
Mid-May we started a “Brown Bag” food drive for summer breakfast or lunch
items. This includes a shopping list with these items and a special “brown
bag” for money donations to Hopelink.
You will find the shopping lists and “brown bags” on the table in the
narthex. Please remember these children on your trips to the grocery store
..… or with a gift of money.

Bishop's Message
Opening The Book Of Faith
by The Reverend Wm. Chris Boerger, Bishop
The Book of Faith initiative is a five-year project for every member of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). This project is the result of a
memorial from the North Carolina Synod to the 1995 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Its
goal is to increase Biblical knowledge and conversation among all of the members
of this church.
We are a church that affirms that the scriptures are the authoritative source
and norm of our proclamation, faith and life. It is in the scriptures that we
see Jesus. It is in the scriptures that we are confronted with our sin and the
power of God’s grace....Read more...

President's Spotlight
Do you know who came to
Northlake by way of Minnesota? Okay, that could be a rather large group!
This couple is “relatively” new to Northlake. She sings in the choir and has
used her musical talents for Sunday School and Pioneer Clubs. He has used
his knowledge of sound systems, and jumped in with both feet to help during
the call process and various other projects around Northlake (he is also
hard to miss in a crowd). Even though they felt like we were a bit
unfriendly at first, they stuck with us, and we’ve warmed up to them pretty
well. YUP!
I’m talking about Connie
and
Roger Wolter! Roger
and
Connie, thanks for sticking with us! Keep up the good work(s)!

God’s Work. Our
Hands.
This is the theme for
the 2008 NW Washington Synod Assembly, which will be held in Everett on
Friday and Saturday, May 16 and 17. Molly and Alan Murdock are the lay
voting members from Northlake.
Exercisers’
Alert!

Perhaps you’ve noticed
while reading the Sunday church bulletin insert that there seems to be
someone coming to exercise at church at 10 AM on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday. If you’ve wondered who these people are, we are a small group at
the moment: Janet Loewen, Dot Brenchley and Linda Musgrave. Marge Dale
had purchased a set of VHS tapes by way of an infomercial on TV and asked
around for interested ladies who would like to exercise together at the
church. Six or more ladies started out fairly regularly, but some ended up
deciding they preferred to be walking outdoors, so the group dwindled. This
present group has continued to meet for several years now.
Anyone is welcome
to join in. If 10 AM is not a workable time, come at another time and use
the tape or DVD of your choice and ability (they
are in the library).
Just return everything to its proper place when you are finished.

I Am Bonhoeffer: A Credible Life—A
Novel
From privileged
prince to political prisoner
On
April 5, 1943, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor and theologian, was
arrested in his parents' home and taken to Tegel prison in Berlin. In the
isolation and loneliness of his cell, he composed his now-famous poem, "Who
Am I?" Now Paul Barz has composed a novel that posits Bonhoeffer looking
back from his cell over the fateful trajectory that brought him to
prison—and, later, trial and hanging.
From
deep immersion in Bonhoeffer's own papers and the scholarship about him,
Barz's narrative imagines Bonhoeffer's looking back to his childhood and
family; his education and turn to theology and ministry; his travels to
Spain, America, and London; his leadership of the underground seminary at
Finkenwalde; his growing opposition to the Third Reich; and his decisive
involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate Adolf Hitler.
Paul Barz,
born in 1943, is a freelance journalist living in Hamburg, Germany, whose 25
years of work with newspapers and magazines has been augmented by his books
on film and history, especially the history of opposition to the Third
Reich.

Prayer
Chain
Reorganization
As the church receives
requests for special prayers, the Prayer Chain is activated, Those serving
on the Prayer Chain are asked to call the next person on the list, and to
include the prayer concern in their daily prayers.
It is time to update the church Prayer Chain list. Some people currently on
the list are no longer available, and there may be others who would like to
participate.
Please indicate your willingness to serve on the Prayer Chain. You can drop
a pink slip in the offering plate with your name and the words, “Prayer
Chain” or email
mcbee@northlakelutheran.org
by Monday, March 10. A new Prayer Chain list will then be circulated using
the names of those who have indicated their willingness to serve this
important ministry.

Three Generations of “Anenson” Pastors
In 2007 Nathan Anenson was ordained at his home congregation, Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Story City, Iowa.
Nathan’s father is Pastor Stephen Anenson, who is the senior pastor at
Immanuel Lutheran.
And, Northlake’s Pastor LeRoy Anenson, retired, is Nathan’s grand-father and
Stephen’s father.
Thanks be to God for these good and faithful servants.

Offering Options
At the last Church Council meeting, we discussed ways to help people to make
their offerings. Joyce and I have our giving set up directly from our
checking account. This sends money directly to church every month in the
amount that we specify. It allows us to give off of the top of our money,
and also provides us the knowledge that it will always be done so that our
offerings are paid in time, every month. This is always important to help
things flow smoothly for the church.

PIONEER
CLUBS: For kids,
for adults, for community
On Wednesday nights something
special happens. Children come together (preschool-6th grade), from our church as well as from the community and experience being the family of
God. We have fun working on activity awards, we explore the Bible, and we
practice what it means to live as Christians.
